Can you even buy a car today (in the USA) that has the following:

    manual transmission
    manual steering
    manual brakes
    wind em up yourself windows

Sure, I understand it has to have the emission controls on it but if I could get a car without all the electronic stuff on it that tries to disconnect me from the feel of the road.

One more thing... they'll change the name from iMac to Mac, bringing a perfect symmetry to their product line-up:

    Mac
    Mac Pro

    MacBook
    MacBook Pro

Definitely not. There's too much branding in the iMac name. For consumers, it means ease and simplicity with power and looks. Additionally, just calling it Mac would be confusing for everyone, especially when they ask what kind of mac you own?

    "I own a Mac."
    "Yeah? What kind?"
    "A Mac."
"I know. You just said that. But what kind of mac?"
"A Mac. You know. A Mac."
"I'm going to kill you now, sir."

4 week delay if you want the 160GB drive. Maybe I'll buy my own, but it's only $200 from Apple.

Any thoughts - why no Merom?

I'm hoping for a MPB with: Core 2 Duo up to 2.33 Ghz - Flash boot (NAND memory) - better GPU, ATI launched her x1800 mobile GPU march 2006 - 802.11n - more ram capacity - firewire 800 and faster super drive.

But Im afread I have to wait untill january for this master piece of mobile technology. :(

The X1800 is a monster though...... I think the only thing you can even find it in is some of those high-end 17" gaming behemoth laptops. I can't see any possible way they'd fit it into the 15 or 17" MBP.

hopefully it's going to look like this:

    56364

I agree, I want an iMac like computer with the aluminum housing; looks better on my desk! ;)

At any rate, hopefully the form factor will be thinner. I can see the 17" eventually being relegated to eMac status.

"We're not sitting around doing nothing," Apple said about the prospect that mobile phones may soon emerge as very capable digital music players and challenge the iPod.

This was a pretty interesting quote AppleInsider had from the presentation.

Intel's TDPs are not actual power consumed. So yes, the 130 W scenario still kicks.

Correct, the power consumed is less than any of the TDP ratings.

Like I said, yes it is, but under a certain level of strain you do not want to run it. Also, we are not talking about a DIMM, we are talking about the capacity of RAM per module. It's a safe assumption to assume 20W per each 1GB of RAM. So if a module has 2GBs, then its 40 W. Now you can also say 10W, but 20W is much better for maximum scenarios. If your PSU can handle a maximum scenario it will not be strained.

No you're just overestimating the power required for the GPU and are very wrong about the memory. DDR3 is around 4-5W per DIMM, not 10W-20W per GB.

What computers do you have operating to get those points? You must be an IT admin or something surely they are not your computers?

Actually they ARE all mine along with the electric bill and heat :p I have 4 amd athlon x2 4400+ machines which don't produce vary many points, a phenom x4 9600, a phenom II x4 965 black with 3 gpu's, core i7 920 with 3 gpu's and a 2009 Mac Pro 2x2.66 cpu's running bigadv units. The gpu's are 2 x GT 260 and 4 x GTX 275. I know that is a bit of money and the power bill is quite high, but hey it's a thing to spend money on I suppose. I could spend it on my house and yard which could use it but...

At work we have a pile of new Nehalem Dell's and IBM power 7's that I would love to fold on but I can't do that because it would interfere with the work they have to do which is bio science related as well. And well, I would lose my job... they aren't very keen on personal use of company hardware.

What do you think about the rumours that a single socket Conroe thanks to its superior memory handling effiency (~70%?) compared to Xeons DB-Dimms lousy (~25?) might crush a dual socket Xeon in memory intesive tasks, like photoshop.

Have you heard seen any data on that one, exept the specuatlion on Anandtech?
    It's nonsense, frankly.

It is speculation (or FUD) based on a single facet of the system design, without considering all of the factors that affect real application performance. (Remember when Apple was whining about the horrible "pipeline bubble" problem with the Pentium - meanwhile Pentiums and Xeons were benchmarking just fine against the Apples?)

Dell has submitted SPEC results for Woodcrest and Conroe systems, and they're virtually the same - with a very slight advantage to Conroe.

Touch interfaces don't NECESSARILY mean touchscreen interfaces.

The Magic Trackpad http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/07/apples-magic-trackpad-or-magic-slate-revealed/ would allow for multi-touch on desktops, enabling many iOS applications to be used on a desktop computer (and obviously laptops could do the same thing with their trackpads).

Touch input in a desktop environment could be useful for manipulating or selecting MULTIPLE buttons/sliders/whatever at the same time which you can't do with a mouse.

There are lots of ways this could be useful.

but a replacement of keyboard and mice don't think so...

I recall some of the naysayers around here not even a year ago stating that such a device would never be suitable for gaming. And here we are. With HD output to your TV.

    Vision, people. Vision.

Who would have thought that Apple would be able to start the underpinnings of a mobile console gaming like device, in only its second generation.

I'm sure that the drive with be built-to-order only. They are far too expensive and appeal to such a small audience (right now) that having it standard would just iritate people buying pro line equipment who don't need these drives yet because of the unnecessary costs.

If true, this is simply great news all around. The potential for updates, new additions to existing computer lines, iPods, iSight, etc. Was there ever a time where so much was happening in such a short span of time for Apple? I'm sure there was, but this is pretty impressive.

I almost want to drop my plans to get a C2D MBP and get a 23" iMac. Almost.:)

LOL If only it were that easy.

I bought the MBP because suspiciously my PB G4 decided to die on me right around that time and I, of course, rationalized and used it as an excuse with myaself... and now I kick myself in the butt for it too because 1 week after I bought my MBP, Apple released the 17" MBP for the same price I paid for my 15".**kick*Well, you could have returned it for a 10% restocking fee up to 10 days after purchase and bought the 17" then. Did you not know that?

Yonah doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Merom is pin-compatible and costs exactly the same amount. Besides, it would be a PR boost for Apple to have the entire lineup 64-bit and "Leopard ready".

They can still update the mini in February or March to be "Leopard ready".

Ipod touch with a storage of classic... But then we say classic good bye :(
I think apple made mistake calling an Ipod touch - Ipod :) they should call this staff - Itouch :D and there would no be anny problem. Because both machines wouldn't compete with each other and there wouldn't be any discussion which one is better - they would be just different apple staff. And "classic" wouldn't be considered as something old and out of fashion but would sit on his throne of best and timeless mp3 player on market :)
Now if they want turn classic on his road they have to call him "holly grahl of sound" :D and of course improve it a bit.

Most critical applications to be out in september? wouldnt adobe fall into this category???

isn't he referring to Apple's own apps?

but wait, what are the critical Apple apps that are yet not in universal binary?

    Really? How shocking!

Imagine, the U.S. European Command, headed by an American!

Next you'll be telling us that the U.S. President is an American, too.

Oh? He chose to leave those two significant letters out of his post.

I think we'll see... update to FCP because it is time

Something might be happening there. My order for a custom-build MBP and FCP Universal upgrade is taking a month... not because building the MBP is taking so long (3 days to put it together), but because the FCP upgrade is delayed.

How long can it take to get a small box of DVDs off a shelf? Hmm...

(OTOH, if there's a big FCP update, I'm sure I wouldn't get it for the 35 I paid).
